From an #1 Bestselling Author - over 1 million books in circulation.

It’s 1949, and Denver private investigator Dewey Webb isn’t thinking about murder, he’s pondering the stack of bills he can’t pay. Then he runs into an old army acquaintance, Roy Jefferson, who is well-dressed, flashing cash, and wanting Dewey’s help. Dewey has his suspicions, however, Roy pays him substantially just to meet him later and hear his problem. Dewey agrees, but before they can talk, Roy dies, an apparent suicide. But is that the case?

Since Dewey has taken Roy’s money, he feels honor-bound to look into Roy’s death. What Dewey discovers leads him to believe someone from Roy’s sordid past may have murdered him. And that same someone may now be after Dewey as well. As Dewey works to find a possible killer, he’s forced to question many things, including his own sense of honor.

A hard-boiled, historical mystery that's great for fans who love a traditional detective crime story with a noir flavor, but without a lot of sex or swearing.

Dewey Webb first appeared in the Reed Ferguson mystery, Back Story. Pick up a copy of Back Story to find out more about this classic hard-boiled detective.

Great Reviews for the Reed Ferguson private investigator series

Kirkus Reviews
The promising kickoff to Pawlish's comic mystery series, starring far-from-perfect PI Reed Ferguson. Pawlish earns high marks for plot construction, with twists and turns naturally unfolding as Ferguson, inexperienced but not incapable, feels his way through the case. A good-humored mystery series worth following.

5 star review
Oh how I’ve missed the Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe characters that saw me with a flashlight in the dead of night flipping pages to see what happened next. Thank you Ms. Pawlish for bringing back to life this long-lost art of the detective battling against all odds and getting to the bottom of things.

Honor Among Thieves The Dewey Webb Historical Mystery Series Book 4 edition by Renee Pawlish Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I have now read all four of the Dewey Webb mysteries, and I continue to be highly impressed. They are well written, the mysteries offer all the clues and dead ends you could hope for, and the characters are believable and finely crafted. The stories overall remind me of Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason books, the kinds of stories, it used to be said, that people would be happy to read while hanging onto a strap in a bouncing subway car on the way home from work. In today's self-publishing world of Amazon, there is something else about these books that really strike a chord with me. They are professional from start to finish. Today many people who have dreamed of being writers put a half-baked story with minimal proofreading onto Amazon, hoping they will sell it for fame and fortune. As successful writers will always be able to tell you, there is a whole lot more to the business than that. Renee Pawlish obviously knows the writing business, and she takes it seriously. These books are first rate, not only as stories, but also as products for sale in the publishing business. I hope she continues with many more fine mysteries through a long career. I'll buy them as fast as she can write them.

Honor Among Thieves The Dewey Webb Historical Mystery Series Book 4 edition by Renee Pawlish Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Dewey Webb is an old fashioned private investigator. He runs into any old friend from WWII who pays him to look into something for him. Before Dewey can start to work on his friend's case, his friend is killed. Dewey uses the money he was paid to find out what happened to his friend. He soon finds it's a winding road to the truth.

I highly recommend this book which is in the old noir style of writing. In fact, I love all of Renee Pawlish's books. They are well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat clear to the end.
I enjoy Renee Pawlish's detective series with Reed Ferguson, and now Dewey Webb. The series takes place in post-WWII Denver, mostly on the seedier side. Webb isn't the typical hard-boiled detective cliche, an alcoholic divorced guy down on his luck. Webb has a wife and child that help give him a bright side to look on when he's had too many encounters with criminal elements. In "Honor Among Thieves," an old army buddy asks for help, but appears to have committed suicide before Webb can hear his story. Webb has his doubts, and his investigations take him to some unlikely places. A good read! Pawlish knows how to re-create this time period and the kinds of crimes and criminals that flourished then, I definitely recommend!
Dewey Webb, Denver P.I. sees an old Army acquaintance at a café. Roy Jefferson, the acquaintance, seems surprised to learn that Dewey is a P.I. He arranges a meeting for that evening at an apartment and gives Dewey a retainer to secure his services.. When Dewey arrives for the meeting, he learns that Roy has leapt to his death. In true Dewey Webb fashion, Dewey decides that, since Roy had given him a retainer, he felt obligated to, at least, attempt to determine why he would choose death as an option. What follows is a number of twists and turns which leads to an unseen conclusion.
I love the attention to detail in Rene Pawlish's books. In the Dewey Webb series I recognize the time period of my childhood (but calling it historical fiction makes it and, by extension, me seem so old). While there are people today who idealize those good old days, they were not idyllic. There were no cell phones, few pay phones, and many homes with no phone, making it hard for a private investigator to quickly chase down information, get directions to a location, call the police, or let his wife know he'll be late for dinner. There were frauds, thefts, murders, and disappearances enough to keep PIs in business. Dewey solves mysteries with a lot of surveillance, tailing, interviewing, and intuition, and the reader is challenged to figure out "whodunit" as well. I recommend this book and the rest of the series.
Dewey is hired by an old war acquaintance, Roy Jefferson, to help him. When Dewey goes to meet Roy at an apartment building, he is told Roy jumped off the building and committed suicide. Dewey decides to investigate Roy's death since Roy had paid for his help. Dewey runs into many people who would have wanted to hurt, or even kill Roy, but who did it and what was the motive? This is a well written mystery with a wonderful, surprise ending. I thought I knew who the killer could be at least three times; I was wrong each time. Kudos, Ms. Pawlish!
All of R. Pawlish's books are well plotted, well researched, and well written. All are a pleasure to read as her writing flows easily along.
This story is about an old acquaintance of Dewey's that needs his help but dies before he is able to tell Dewey what he needs done. Dewey is a very dedicated person and has high standards. He feels he has to work for the money he has been paid even though the man is dead.
I enjoy the Dewey Webb series as it takes me back to an older time, when people were more caring and thoughtful. Like Ida. You wouldn't find many folks willing to be a receptionist to Dewey the way she is, and not be paid for it. Ah the good old days, haha.
Love all the characters in this series. I encourage everyone to read all of her books as they are totally worth the time and money.
Keep them coming please because I love reading them.
This is the 4th of the Dewey Webb mysteries and Renee Pawlish has once again created an original story that grabs the reader and doesn't let them go until the last page. The story is enjoyable as a stand alone story or as part of the series.

Dewey runs into an old acquaintance who pays to hire him, but dies before they can talk in about the case. With his dead clients money in hand, Dewey takes on the job of finding out why his client is dead on the evening they were to meet.

The story keeps you guessing, but be careful, you may learn a little history. For some of us who are older, the story brings back some memories of the world as it was. I'm not old enough to remember the time the story takes place in, but the lifestyle is similar in a lot of ways. Renee, thanks for the memories.

Enjoyed the book, and highly recommend it to any reader.
