Thirteen years ago, Eli went on a summer trip with his mother and never came back. Now, existing in a new life as Jacob Somerville, he’s again running from fear and memories, only to end up where he started. As Jacob struggles to reconnect with his father and brothers, he realizes that his lover, Craig Zhao, was the only thing filling his empty heart and standing between him and ghosts of the past. It will take the power of love—from his family, from Craig, and from himself—for Jacob to see that his life truly is filled with the promise of what can be.

A novella from the Dreamspinner Press 2011 Advent Calendar package "I'll Be Home for Christmas"

What Can Be edition by Mary Calmes Literature Fiction eBooks

This was SUCH a nice surprise. I'm not even sure why I'm surprised.. maybe because I didn't expect this one to be so deep and emotional in a little bit more than 100 pages but Mary has a gift in writing and especially with novellas so this one was surely a holiday treat just be prepared for heart ache along with the sweetness.

Jacob Somerville was born Eli Hartline. When he was 15 years old he left his father and two older brothers for a summer vocation with his mother. 3 months turned into much more and Eli found himself not only separated from his family but changing his identity. It's been years, 13 years to be exact and Jacob feels he isn't sure of his place again. He has a loving boyfriend in Chicago one he has left behind and went on a journey to no where starting with his family. Needing to finally see them and maybe find the courage to explain where he was the past 13 years and mostly - why!

It was a bit confusing. Jacob's thoughts were everywhere, he wanted to see his family but though he knows he loves them deep inside somehow trust or maybe a sort of piece of mind for sharing his past eludes him.

He has come so far, generally from everything that happened to him, but also from his life with Craig Zhao, his lover, his LOVE though he is reluctant to admit it even to himself. But staying so far from his safe place turned out far more complicated than he imagined. Only Craig's love can safe him now.

This story was truly heart breaking. I loved it but was also tormented the whole time trying to figure out Jacob's past, the things he can't admit to anyone (but Craig). But with Craig everything can be possible, he can have it all, if only he agrees to reverse his strange decision of running away.

Every book of this length should be like this. The plot played out at just the right pace and the characters all had time to strut their stuff. Aside from being well-written the story was intriguing as we are slowly exposed to the secrets Josh/Eli has been keeping for thirteen years. You WILL like this book. The super-rich aren't my favorite subjects to read about but this was darn good. This book caused me to re-read all the mostly amazing works by this author. I think Mary Calmes may be my favorite now, and she excels at longer multi-volume works but shorter ones are good too. ;)
I like Mary Calmes, but she has this intensity you have to be willing to buy into, or it can all feel a bit melodramatic. I like a bit of melodrama and passion and angst, so this piece works for me. It's very short, perhaps too short for the amount of story it's trying to tell.

Eli/Jake is on the run from old ghosts and thinks it might be time to see his family, but he is very ambivalent. His brother, Chase, (who I liked a lot) bumps into him and encourages him to come home. His lover Craig is also chasing after him, wanting him to come home. And Eli is collapsing under the weight of everyone's expectations.

It's 1455 locations, and I think it could have been double that to tell the same story, so it felt a bit rushed to me, which is why I gave it 4 stars, but I do rate is a keeper and a reread, just wish it had been allowed to unfold more slowly.
Mary Calmes is just a wonderful writer. Usually, pretty much flawless - great, deeply drawn characters, believable, and sometimes witty, dialog and no shortage of moments that move your heart.

I am surprised that I like this. I don't like short - neither short stories nor novellas - because I really enjoy the slow development of characters and plot, and I need time to get really invested in the characters. The only reason I purchased this short book is that I'd already read all of her full-length books available for the .

And I'm so glad I did. I won't bore you with the plot details (after all, Mary Calmes weaves her plots infinitely better than I ever could) or listing the characters. I just want you to know that this book is almost profoundly moving - it is all about family (the good and the bad) and love.

And no one writes about love better than Mary Calmes.
Eli left California thirteen years ago with his mother for a summer vacation before school started back. His mother needed a break from the pressures of being a successful man's wife and mother, and Eli needed to be away from a crush gone wrong, and to watch out for his mother. They never came back.

Until now.

Present day, Eli, driving through his home town after hightailing it away from his lover, Craig Zhou, is spotted by his younger brother as he stops for gas. "Funny the people you forgot till you remembered". And remembered he is - he is the image of their mother. He is there, after all, to tell the truth, so he follows his brother home to be reunited with his father and other brother. Who are equally as stunned, as joyful and as blown away to see him again after all this time.

All sorts of memories, good and bad, surge to the surface for Eli. Or, as he is known now, Jake. And when he finally, finally explains the story of what happened all those years ago to his family, will Eli be able to find peace of his own? And will he be able to forgive himself and stop running?

This story is just flat out amazing. Mary Calmes created, in such limited time and space, a beautifully realized, scared, troubled, hopeful and tragic young man. His past constantly at his heels, he has been on the run, from himself, from others, from his family and from tragedy for years, and thankfully, it is time for it to end.

This story is about how family can both hurt and redeem you, how love can damage and heal you, and how running from the past can bring you directly to your future. And Ms. Calmes gets this just right - the characters, the pacing, the quiet pain and desperation and loyalty that is Eli and the calm steady love that is Craig.

"When love trumped passion, you knew you were with the right guy".

And when talent rules, you know you have the right author.

Stunning. Really.
